New perspectives on outdoor coaching
I hadn’t been climbing in the Mourne Mountains since school, but a rare trip away to celebrate a Big Birthday this week saw us clamber to the top of Hen Mountain on the most glorious of days.
I’ve been intentionally seeking out more opportunities to immerse myself in the glorious environment we’re lucky to share here in Northern Ireland following a workshop organised by Wendy Robinson of the AoEC that has been keeping me company over the past couple of weeks. Challenging and calming in equal measure, we explored the role that nature can play in our coaching work with Tabitha Jayne.
Outdoor coaching is one of my favourite ways to work with clients, and I’ve been reflecting about how powerful this mode of thinking together can be. The workshop helped me refine my understanding of some of the different elements in play in my walking-coaching work - the shift out of the office environment, the role of movement in unlocking fresh ideas, a different quality of conversation when we are beside someone rather than across a table from them - and offered a fresh understanding of the regenerative role of nature in the process.
